The McKinley men gloated over Bryan’s nomination. They could not believe that anyone so young, inexperienced, and extreme had won the Democratic nomination. Bryan’s Chicago platform was a direct assault on the sitting president of his party, alienating Cleveland’s supporters and splitting the Democratic Party.
McKinley and the Republican managers did not grasp how Bryan and Free Silver were already roiling the GOP in Midwestern and Western states, and were slow to meet the threat.
